What about end-of-year examinations with homeschooling? If there are no examinations, how will we know if our children have been successful with the academic requirements for that grade? ~ Karan, Benoni
Answer
There are various answers to this question.
Some parents find that because they are monitoring their children’s progress on a day-to-day basis, they are fully aware of how their children are achieving and they do not need any outside assessments. Especially if you using a reputable curriculum for subjects like Maths, you will know if your child is mastering the work and achieving good scores or not.
There are also some very formal homeschool curriculum providers that include exams and testing as part of their service.
However, for many homeschoolers, as their confidence in their homeschooling grows and they see their children start to flourish, test scores become less and less important. In fact, some parents have reported that the test results did not reveal to them anything that they did not already know about their children’s progress in various subjects or skills.
For high school homeschoolers, of course, formal testing becomes an important issue for grades 10 -12 for students wanting to obtain recognized school-leaving certificates, and so most of them enroll with one or other of the high school homeschool curriculum providers that facilitate this goal.
