A homeschooling friend’s daughter, Ashleigh, graduated in December 2011, from Stellenbosch university with a BSc Dietetics.
She was homeschooled from Grade 5 onwards and wrote the Cambridge International Examinations in order to get a school-leaving certificate.
Stellenbosch University requires that all students write access tests and Ashleigh was accepted to study Dietetics at their Tygerberg campus in Cape Town.
She stayed in one of the campus residences and adapted easily to campus life. Her leadership skills were soon recognized and in a short time, she was serving on the ‘huis komittee’ and was actively involved in all sorts of student activities and arranging student functions.
Ashleigh is now (2012) completing her community service year at a small rural hospital at Zithulele, near Coffee Bay in the Transkei. She has been thrown in at the deep end and will be the only, and therefore, the chief dietician of the hospital – shoes she believes she is adequately equipped to fill!
Already she has taken initiative to bring improvements to her area of work.
Update 2013 – Ashleigh is now working as a dietician for an NGO at Zithulele.
