Three homeschoolers took the top 2 positions in the junior Global Natural Science Olympiad for Grades 8-9 in 2013.
In joint first place (shared with a student from Hoerskool Diamantveld) was Carmien Mienie who scored 90%.
Two more homeschoolers tied in second place with a score of 88%, namely Lucille Erwee and Dehan Lamprecht.
A hundred schools and over 2000 learners took part in the Global olympiad, which is in its 15th year.
The top ranked school was Westville Boys’ High School with a score of 80.8%. Hoerskool Delmas was second with 77% and Hoerskool Kroonstad was third with 76.6%
As a group, the homeschool team achieved 71.64%, well above the national average of 59.52%.
Peet Pelser of Global said that he is glad that homeschoolers can benefit from the olympiads. He said its not only about achievement but participation is also most important to them. Olympiads expose learners to something other than what they are used to.
The Global natural science olympiad is in multiple choice format in both English and Afrikaans.
The natural sciences seek to understand how the world and universe around us works and include five major fields of study: chemistry, astronomy, earth science, physics and biology.
