Manie Kohn and Shannon Howard, two homeschoolers from Gauteng, had the privilege of being part of The Sound of Music production at The Montecasino in 2014.
They had to undergo a few sets of auditions, where they had to sing, dance and act, as well as learn a part of The Hills are Alive in three parts. They also had to be measured again and again – as the kids need to have a nice “ski slope” look.
The cast – 3 sets of 6 kids – was finalised in December of 2013, and the work started on 10 March. They were at rehearsals for 4 weeks, 8 hours a day, 6 days a week, after which they started performing. Doing 2-3 performances a week as well as being there for standby 2-3 times a week, was hard work and required the whole family to support the ‘stars’. However it has been a wonderful journey, enriching our lives with the exposure the kids had. They really enjoyed every moment.
Manie played the role of Friedrich and Shannon was cast as Louisa.
Each team performed 25 times – a full 10 weeks of shows.
It was such a blessing that our kids are homeschooled because we were able to adapt our schoolwork, and also see this – as all real life is – as education, and part our their curriculum!
